Safe handling starts before a firearm reaches the firing line. Treat every firearm as loaded, keep the muzzle in a safe direction, keep your finger outside the trigger guard until you have decided to fire, and identify the target and what lies around and beyond it.
Before the range visit
Transport and store the firearm as required by law. Pack suitable eye and hearing protection, use ammunition intended for the firearm, and check the range's rules before arriving. A new shooter should tell the range officer and arrange competent supervision.
On the firing line
Follow the range officer's commands immediately. Do not handle a firearm while people are forward of the firing line. If a stoppage occurs, keep the muzzle in a safe direction and ask for assistance when you are unsure of the correct clearing procedure.
When handling ends
Unload and verify the firearm in the place and manner directed by the range. Account for equipment and ammunition, wash after exposure to residue, and record any fault that should be inspected before the firearm is used again.
A range may impose stricter rules for its layout and disciplines. Its safety briefing and range officer take precedence during the visit.
