Firearm licensing and competency: official starting points
A source-led starting point for finding current South African competency and firearm-licence requirements.

South African firearm applications are governed by the Firearms Control Act, its regulations and the administrative requirements published by the South African Police Service. Start with the official material rather than an old checklist copied into a discussion.
Begin with competency
SAPS explains competency and firearm-licence services through its Firearms, Liquor and Second-Hand Goods service pages. Identify the competency and licence process that applies to your circumstances, then obtain the current form and checklist from SAPS or your Designated Firearms Officer.
Prepare a traceable application
Keep copies of forms, supporting documents, proof of payment and any receipt or reference issued when you submit. Check that names, identity numbers, firearm particulars and contact details agree across the application. Ask the receiving office to clarify any current local submission arrangements.
Check the current law
The consolidated wording and commencement status of legislation can change. Use the official Act and regulations for the rule itself, and use court judgments or reputable legal commentary only to understand how a disputed provision has been interpreted.
This guide is general orientation, not legal advice. For a disputed, refused, lapsed or urgent matter, obtain advice from a South African practitioner who works with firearm law.
